San Benito Historical Society requests photos for Historic San Benito photo book

If a picture is worth a thousand words, San Benito has a unique story to tell. The San Benito Historical Society, together with Arcadia publishing, announces plans to publish a book on the history of San Benito.  The Society is requesting members of the community and San Benito natives to search their photo collections for images of San Benito life from 1904 through the 1950s.
 
Photos may be scanned at several locations in San Benito, and the deadline to submit photos is June 30th. A permission form will be required for each photo submitted.  These can be picked up at the scanning locations prior to scanning to save time.  They may also be downloaded here. 
 
Tootie Madden, San Benito Historical Society president said photos of families, churches, businesses, service organizations, and social and recreational activities are particularly encouraged.

“We are looking for photos, especially action shots, of fruit and vegetable packing sheds, and cotton gins. Pictures of early Christmas parades, dances at La Villita, the Aztec rooftop, and the Stonewall Jackson patio, holiday and birthday parties possibly showing a piñata or pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey would be valuable as well,” Madden said.
 
Photos may be brought for scanning at the following times and locations in San Benito:
 
Monday-Friday
Municipal Building – 401 N. Sam Houston
Smith-Reagan Insurance Agency – 148 N. Sam Houston
(Please use the rear entrance and enter from E. Batts St.)
 
Monday, Wednesday or Friday
San Benito News office – 356 N. Sam Houston
(Optimum time to bring your photos is Wednesday from 1-5 p.m.)
 
Saturdays:
The Museums of San Benito – 210 E. Heywood
 
Madden said the Society also welcomes donations of photographs that depict Historic San Benito.
 
“Photos are precious treasures that we want to care for and protect for generations to come. We absolutely accept donations of photos (both now and in the future) for our archives that depict San Benito history,” she said.
Madden stressed to bear in mind there is a limit to the number of photos that can be used in this publication and there is a deadline for submitting all photos and descriptions to the publisher.
 
“Call or e-mail your old San Benito friends, relatives and classmates and see what they treasures they can produce,” she said. “All of the members of the San Benito Historical Society are looking forward to an enthusiastic response from the entire community.”
